Mystères du Japon

Visual Scenography for Concerts at the Montreal Symphony Orchestra (OSM) | Feb. & Mar. 2010 | Montréal (Canada)

As a component of a four-part concert an assemblage of stand-alone music videos explores various aspects of the history and art of Japan. Conceptual and narrowed animations coact with the orchestrated versions of Japanese poems and establish an additional level of narration to the underlying, figurative language of traditional Japanese songs.

A detailed comment on the concert by Kent Nagano (in French) here. Further information on the website of Peter Schmidt.

Leben? Oder Theater?

Visual Scenography & VJing for Reading & Concert | October 2008 | Forum Rex | Wuppertal (Germany) and other locations

“Und da dies in dieser Zeit mit allen Menschen ebenso war, so dass niemand mehr imstande war, einem Anderen zuzuhören, sondern gleich begann, von sich selbst zu erzählen, so erwachte in einem zugleich leidenden und etwas darüberstehenden Wesen ein Gefühl von größter Hilflosigkeit aller Menschen, die sich an Strohhalmen festzuhalten versuchten, bei schrecklichsten Gewitterstürmen.”

Conception and realization of a visual scenography that combines original paintings with chary motion graphics,
interplaying with readings and musical parts. Leben? Oder Theater? is an autobiographical play by Charlotte Salomon,
a pursued jewish painter and writer.

WEISS

Experimental Short Movie | 2007 | Length: 13 min. | Format: DVCPro HD 16:9

The storyline discloses a young man’s life which proceeds in opposition to the uniform outside world. Secluded in his room his main concern is with the neighbouring, unfulfilled love. A casual incident, effected by external circumstances, provides the opportunity to break out of society’s mechanized moulds.

A dystopy, abandoning speech and text, revealing expressive audio-visual scenes by the use of harmonic symbiosis of music, sound design and visual aesthetics.

With the aid of a small and supportive staff WEISS was shot in five days in the city centre of Köln. Taking the time needed made it possible for us to carry out the preparation and post production on our own. WEISS had it’s premiere at the KHM Showcase in Cinenova, Köln in October 2007 and was followed by it’s first official screening at the Time Warp Festival 2008 in Mannheim (Germany) where it won the Time Warp Film Award 2008 for best short movie.

King Arthur

Audio-Visual Scenography for Semi-Opera by Henry Purcell | June 2007 | Neuss (Germany)

Conception and realisation of an audio-visual scenography for King Arthur. Implying projections, light and sound.
In cooperation with Eva Kehl, Kai Hoyme and Mario Zaradic.

Within the semi-opera King Arthur, directed by Nora Bauer, media-staging meets up with classical performing arts.
Imagery for might, war, loss of truth or feelings are communicated by projected documentary and graphical impressions.
The staging appears reduced and minimalistic, black&white-projections overlay stage and actors like illustrative quotations.

Produced by: Academy of Media Arts Köln | Direction: Nora Bauer | In collaboration with: Rheinisches Landestheater Neuss, Capella Piccola Neuss, Metamorphosis-Ensemble, Köln.

Fresco

Contribution to Group-Exhibition “Schein Hain” | February 2006 | Trinitatis Church | Köln (Germany)

Fresco deals with the nonessential beautification and idealization of classical frescos. It is an animated, intentionally cheesy projection which was woven seamlessly into the architectural structure of archs and columns inside the Trinitatis church in Köln. Fresco was integrated into the coaction of the exhibited works, which altogether formed up to a harmonious illumination of the monumental interior.
